The Pulse: Episode 17

The nausea had passed and Billy no longer felt like he was on the Tilt a Whirl, but the blackness was complete. Billy felt his anxiety growing, “Mallory? I can’t see anything.”

“I’m here. It’s okay. Just hold on a moment, the blackness will clear.” Her words felt soothing to him and his anxiety started to wane. Though he wondered how she knew this.

Gradually they were again enveloped in that iridescent mist, this time it felt cool against his skin and he relaxed, the tension leaving his body.

Mallory squeezed his hand, “Any time now. Wait for it.” In the center of the mist an area began to clear as if looking through the port hole of a boat and then began to expand into the area of an open window and finally a doorway. Ahead of them there was an Indian teepee to the left, they were standing in a small clearing. Ten feet in front of them a small fire was burning inside a rock lined fire ring at which the warrior was kneeling adding more wood to the fire. To the right there was the white wolf sitting on his haunches observing the area. They stood for a moment looking about, taking it all in, inhaling the fresh air and absorbing the peacefulness of the settting.

Returning their gaze back to the fire they saw that the warrior and wolf had turned and were looking directly at them. The warrior smiled and then pointed intently at the teepee.

Billy and Mallory turned their focus in that direction and as if they were stepping through a doorway the teepee became the central focus of the scene they were observing. The drape at the entrance parted, a slight violet glow could be seen from within. A handsome couple stepped out from the opening. The man was over 6 feet , the woman nearly as tall.

Though the two were dressed in similar garments to the warrior, their adornments were slightly more elaborate. Perhaps indicating a higher station or different function in the tribe. Billy’s impression was that this was some kind of medicine man or elder, though he appeared to only be in his thirties.

The two were different in other ways as well. Instead of the black hair usually observed on native American tribes-people, the man had rich full blonde hair cascading over his shoulders and the woman had a full head of curly, almost fire red hair. Their skin, though dark like the warrior, also had an iridescence about it. Even from this distance their eyes were visible as having a violet tinge around blue iris. Otherwise they looked to be physically human.

The man and woman turned to face Billy and Mallory, “I am Tiamah and this is my spouse Diadrey. Welcome to our home. Please join us.” He spread his arms indicating a large blanket half way between the teepee and the fire. The four of us xx took a place on the blanket while the warrior stood slightly back as if on guard.

Once Mallory was seated, the white wolf got up and casually trotted over to her and laid down at her side like a German Shepherd, sliding his head between her hand and the blanket. His crystal blue eyes looked into Mallory’s green, Billy could feel some kind of connection between the two. Xx It seemed the most natural thing in the world. He felt chills watching though he was completely unafraid and calm when the wolf briefly turned and looked directly into his eyes. Xx He felt as if he were completely safe and thought he heard a voice inside say, “Relax, I accept you and will protect.”

Billy started to speak, “I am…”

when Tiamah interrupted, “Yes, Billy and Mallory. We have been waiting for your arrival. Shallay”, he indicated the warrior, “has kept us informed of your progress. And of course ________, the one you call Roger, has been observing and protecting you both for some time now.”

Billy shook himself a bit, it all seemed too comfortable, mesmerizing. “Wwwait. How is this possible? Are we having some sort of weird shared dream?”

Mallory leaned in, “Billy I don’t know how either, but I’m sure this is no dream. It feels different somehow. And very real.”

Tiamah laughed, “Yes, indeed it is real. And I’m sure very confusing. All will become clear in due time. Your acclimation is not yet complete and there are things that we must discuss. But that will come in time. Shallay stay with you and we will soon meet again.”

Mallory stood, “I don’t know why this seems almost natural to me, but I have questions that I need answers to.”

Tiamah looked towards Diadrey and nodded. Diadrey spoke; her voice soothing yet firm, “We understand your confusion, but you must wait just a little longer. Xx Take comfort that it will not be long till you start to see things differently and we will speak again soon.” Xx With that Diadry reached for the medallion around her neck and touched the large medallion hanging from it with both hands, the stone set inside the ornate frame began to glow red.Xx

Xx (emotion) Billy recognized it immediately as the red rock from the cliff that had started this whole story. “Wait!”xx

There was a violet flash and the two of them were standing in Mallory’s kitchen. Turning and looking out the opened front door, they saw Shallay, the Indian warrior, at his side the white wolf looking in their direction. The wolf turned and ambled into the bushes. Shallay smiled then dissipated into thin air.

Billy looked at Mallory, “What just happened?”

She turned and looked directly into his eyes, “Perhaps, we should talk. I suspect we each have pieces to this puzzle.” She took his hand and led him to the kitchen table where they both sat down. Gomer padded across the room and laid down at her feet. “I’m not sure where to start.”

“Those were not American Indians, though they appeared to be. A lot of strange things have been happening to and around me for the past several weeks and I think this may be at the heart of it.” Billy was not angry, but aggressive in his attitude.

“Hold back Billy. We’re in this together, that much is clear. I’ve also been experiencing strange things, and it started several months ago, the first time I saw the white wolf. For a long time I believed that some of the stuff that Uncle Ethan had told me was either just stories or an adult fantasy he had cooked up to amuse me. Now I think he was telling me the truth and preparing me for something bigger.”

“Bigger how?”

“I’m not sure exactly. But I feel a connection to this Tiamah and Diadrey that’s difficult to put into words. Though my training says I should be cautious, in my heart and my gut it feels right, acceptable though certainly not normal.”

“Wow, I get what you’re saying. When all this”, Billy swept his arms around himself, “began to happen to me. I thought I was losing my mind, imagining things. There were no logical explanations for any of it.”

“Billy, the reason I originally called you.”

“Yeah, right. A lot’s gone down since then. What had you so…”

Mallory interrupted him, “Last night Joey came to see me…”
