Hey! I’m back. We just finished a very nice jaunt checking out some local breweries and a distillery. We drove out to our first stop, the Copper Cannon Distillery in Chesterfield, NH located at the NH/VT line whose specialty is rum. We were greeted by Karina who gave us some history of the distillery and then a brief tour of the whole process. We also got a chance to talk with Blake, one of the founders, who gave me some more of the intricacies of the process. I’m a retired engineer so we had two engineers talking about engineering stuff, the only thing missing was glasses of spirits to share, LOL. But not to worry, Karina brought us back out to the front and then we were able to try out their full offering.
They have just recently introduced gin. I’m not too much of a gin drinker, bourbon is really my kryptonite, but I understand they are aging some bourbon now and intend to add it to their selection in the future. My fiancée however is a big fan of gin as is my son and theirs is quite good, smooth, and different from a lot of what’s out there so we left with two bottles of that. They had five different rum offerings which we enjoyed, leaving with a bottle of the maple, and one of the pumpkin.
By the way they also make maple syrup and age it in barrels, this was delightful and of course we left with a bottle of this also. If you’re in the area, definitely worth checking them out!
Being a Sunday during Covid we found the selection of shops open to be limited, but on our way back my fiancée did discover a few breweries that were open and serving. Our first stop was the Modestman Brewery in the center of Keene where we stopped to try a taste of some of their brews. My lady selected a stout, while I went with a belgian, very nice. We also found a double IPA for my son as his birthday is around the corner. I’m not at all an IPA drinker, though I’ve developed a tolerance to taste, so we can generally tell by my facial reaction if my son will enjoy it, ha ha.
From there we moved on to the Elm City Brewing Company, not just a brewery but also a full restaurant. Still somewhat full from brunch we opted to skip an appetizer and just go with some sandwiches. My fiancée tried the red wines but did not find them to her liking so went with their Truffle Shuffle stout instead. They had an intriguing selection of house special cocktails so I decided on “I’m Dreaming of a White Margarita”, think pina colada with tequila and you’ll get the idea wonderfully smooth and creamy. For the meal my partner got their veggie burger on a gluten free roll, (nice and fresh), which she said was very nicely put together, and sweet potato fries. I went German with Beef Knockwurst in a toasted pretzel bun, grain mustard and a side of potato wedges. Probably the best knockwurst I’ve had in a lot of years, thoroughly enjoyable. The meal came to about $50 with drinks.
From their beer selection I found an IPA, Hipsta’s Paradise I thought my son would enjoy and purchased a growler to go. Happy Birthday buddy! The growlers are only $10, but require a $4 deposit, but the bottle can be returned to avoid a future deposit on a refill.
Thoroughly filled and sated we got back on the road to our inn, but with one more planned stop in Peterborough center, a repeat trip to Post and Beam Brewing. We had stopped there after Del Rossi’s the night before and caught them just before closing. After a quick brew we had to leave hoping to stop back for a larger sampling of their wares before ending our Peterborough trip.
For now it’s late and I’m going to sign off and tell you about that next time. – Randy
